MCDA Awards Criteria - Awards Nominations Close 5-1-13

Luther T. Spayde Award of Excellence

This award will be presented annually to one outstanding member of MCDA who:

  • Demonstrates excellence as evidenced by choral music training, performance and scholarship;
  • Demonstrates excellence as evidenced by long-standing commitment to choral music in Missouri, positive communication with colleagues and active participation through service and leadership in MCDA.

Selection Procedure:

  • Nominations will be solicited from the general membership of MCDA:
  • Nominees must be current members of MCDA (posthumous nominations accepted);
  • Nominator may be asked to submit a biographical sketch of the nominee along with a letter of nomination from a current member of MCDA and letters of support from two other members;
  • The MCDA Executive Board shall serve as the selection committee reviewing nominations and voting to select a recipient for the award;
  • Current and immediate past members of the Executive Board are ineligible to be nominated for this award;
  • Nominations are automatically carried forward for two subsequent years, and thereafter may be resubmitted for future consideration.

Opus Award

This award will be presented annually to one outstanding choral composition in accordance with the following criteria:

• Must exemplify the highest standard of choral music composition;

• Must be an original composition (not an arrangement of previously existing musical material) by a Missouri composer and/or commissioned by a Missouri choral ensemble in a school, church, or community setting;

• In the case of vocal jazz, show choir, and ethnic and multicultural works, arrangements of previously existing musical material will be accepted, but the arrangement must demonstrate an original and creative approach on the part of the arranger;

• May be published or unpublished.

Selection Procedure:

          Nominations will be solicited from the general membership of MCDA;

  • Compositions must be submitted by a current member of MCDA who may or may not be the composer;
  • Submissions (if mailed) must include 15 copies and one audio recording of the composition OR 1 copy and an audio recording uploaded here;
  • The state Repertoire and Standards Chairs shall serve as the selection committee completing a blind review of submissions and voting to select a recipient for the award. Current MCDA Repertoire and Standards Chairs are ineligible for this award.
  • Each MCDA member may sponsor only one composition and each composition may be submitted only once.

Podium Award

This award will be presented as circumstances warrant to an outstanding member of MCDA who has made exemplary contributions to the choral art as evidenced by distinguished performance.

Selection Procedure:

        Nominations will be solicited from the general membership of MCDA;

        Nominees must be current members of MCDA (posthumous nominations accepted);

  • Nominators may asked to provide a biographical sketch of the nominee along with a letter of nomination from a current member of MCDA and letters of support from two other members;
  • The MCDA Executive Board shall serve as the selection committee reviewing nominations and voting to select a recipient for the award;

        Current and immediate past members of the Executive Board are ineligible to be nominated for this     award;

        Nominations may be resubmitted in subsequent years, but are not automatically carried forward for future consideration.

Prelude Award

This award will be presented annually to one outstanding member of the Missouri Choral Directors Association in accordance with the following criteria: 

        Nominee is a current member of MCDA in 3rd, 4th or 5th years of contractual experience as a full-time         choral director;

        Demonstrates success in the teaching and performance of choral music in Missouri;

        Demonstrates a professional demeanor in interactions with music colleagues;

        Demonstrates potential as an exemplary professional with an extended career in choral music;  

        Demonstrates a spirit of service and involvement through active participation in MCDA and                   choral music in general.

Selection Procedures:

  • Nominations will be solicited from the general membership of MCDA;
  • Nominees must be current members of MCDA in 3rd, 4th or 5th years of contractual experience as a full-time choral director;
  • Nominations must include a brief biographical sketch of the nominee along with a letter of nomination from a current member of MCDA and a letter of support from an administrator or supervisor recommending the nominee;
  • The Executive Board of the Missouri Choral Directors Association shall serve as the selection committee reviewing the nominees;
  • Members of the MCDA Executive Board are ineligible to be nominated for this award;
  • Nominations may be resubmitted for the duration of the eligibility period (3-5 years), but are not automatically carried forward for future consideration.
