Using the Super Bowl to make Super Singers

Elizabeth McFarland - Middle School

Hello, Middle Level folks!

Though I normally only cheer for Team Commercials and Team Halftime, I really enjoyed the Super Bowl last night! My favorite part of the evening's game was seeing so many music programs represented within the National Anthem and Halftime festivities!

Today, I showed a Youtube clip with my students of the National Anthem performance featuring Kelly Clarkson and the Indianapolis Children's Choirs.

It was helpful to share background information about the way they prepared for their performance.  It helped my students understand what it takes to prepare a polished performance! This article from Indystar.com gives some pertinent background info you can share with your students to go along with the National Anthem video linked above.

We are so lucky to get to help our students understand how to process the information the media puts in front of them almost constantly! We are able to help our students learn the skills with which to live as knowledgable media consumers for the rest of their lives!

It's also fun to think about the fact that if Madonna were a career music teacher, at age 53, she may be close to retirement!  I would love to challenge some of my middle level choral colleagues to a Madonna half-time show inspired dance off.  I will bring my best moves!

Happy music making! --- Elizabeth Hogan McFarland, 6-8 Grade Vocal Music Instructor, Parkway Northeast Middle School, Creve Coeur, MO emcfarland@pkwy.k12.mo.us
